She studied koto (stringed musical instrument) from an early age under Utafusa Tsuriya I and Yasuko Nakajima, both prominent figures of the Seiha school of koto, before assuming the name Utafusa Tsuriya II.

 

She also specialises in Japanese music history and ethnomusicology. Now based in Tokyo and Kanazawa, she performs in Japan and abroad.
